My first attempt at keeping a calendar was when I sketched out my own lines on scratch paper and entered my college class schedule by hand each week. Now I have a calendar on my phone that synchronizes with my computer in several formats; daily, weekly, monthly, or even yearly.

All I have to do now is remember to look at it.
What was once normal is now considered outdated in just a few short years. New trends can either make life easier or more complicated.

As a typist I questioned the value of a computer over a typewriter. Why in the world would I want to buy two items, a computer and a printer, rather than one typewriter that did the whole job at once? Now days computers do a whole lot more than word process and sync calendars.

Because of the speed of current technology, new trends are practically falling over each other. When Thomas Edison told gas companies that gas lights would soon be replaced by the electric lightbulb, plenty of people didn’t believe him. It took years of physically proving to people that the electric lightbulb was the wave of the future. Now we can’t live without it.

With so many new trends and ideas out there, how do you know which one to choose? When you’re looking at whether to trust a new trend or not, here are a few tips:
Look to the future. Imagine how the trend will work for you in the next 5-10 years. Find out how it will benefit you personally or your business. If you don’t use it effectively in a short amount of time (30-90 day trial period), it won’t make your life easier in the long run.
Save for it. While the initial costs may be more than your budget can handle, saving for a popular trend purchase gives the product time to prove itself valuable.
Talk to trusted sources.  Maybe they’ve already tried it (or know of someone who has) and have some valuable feedback for you. It pays to read reviews before you go with a new trend or product.
Measure it’s value.  Make sure that whatever you decide to go with is in alignment with what you value the most in life.  If it gets you more of what you value highly, then take a serious look.  But if it’s just another distraction, toss it aside for now.
Think about it for a few days. Give yourself a limited amount of time to shop around, take a few notes, then bring yourself back to your present goal. If it’s a good idea today, it will be good idea tomorrow.
It’s true that not all trends are the surest way to go, but it’s well worth doing your homework by talking to people, searching the internet, and asking others who have experience with a new trend to find out if it’s going to be something that will make your life easier and more enjoyable.

Now you’ll have time to dream and imagine what life would be like with that new sparkly mobile app that is currently available. You’ll enjoy it so much that you’ll want to share it with your favorite people. People are always more important than things anyway.
