New Trends to Wielding Power

Power is the ability to get things done – your way.  Sometimes it's a direct order that you give, sometimes a suggestion you make, or a request or the asking of a favor; but the result (if you wield power) is always that the other person acts and you derive a benefit from the other person's actions.

Yet, true power is more than simply controlling the outcome so that it turns out the way you want.  True power is influencing and maximizing the talents and resources of others around you so they are empowered to act in behalf of the desired outcome. Truly powerful people are power magnets because they know how to multiply their resources.
Here’s how to wield true power:
Clearly identify the desired outcome.
Look for and use other’s gifts and talents.
Tap into natural genius.
Remove barriers so power flows both ways.

Clearly identify the desired outcome.
Before you start, know specifically what you want to accomplish. Ask yourself what you want and by when do you want it. Be clear about the objective so everyone involved knows when the goal has been reached.

Look for and use other’s gifts and talents.
Power is not to be confused with control. As you tap into other people’s talents, cast a wide net and you will find talents in unexpected corners. People love to contribute their natural talents. Powerful leaders see an unlimited talent pool and ignore organizational boundaries.

Tap into natural genius.
Study the talents of others and unlock their natural genius. What people do easily and better than anything else is natural genius. They do it without conscious effort and usually without being asked. Identify it for them and give them the reins to accomplish the goal.

Remove barriers so power flows both ways.
Powerful people look for opportunity in every problem. What looks like a barrier is actually a stepping stone or a jumping-off place. As you shine the spotlight on the strengths of your team, you will find power in the most amazing ways.

Just like the power of electricity, power is only seen when it is shared.
