10 Ways to Motivate Yourself to Exercise

Everyone knows that healthy is happy. So, let’s start the new year with upgrading your exercise routine. Here are a few tips on how to put some fun into moving your body.

  1. Work out first

It’s the start that stops most people. Exercise is definitely linked to effective fat loss, so make moving your first priority. Start your day with a nice, brisk workout. That way you will have your workout done before your day gets away from you. At the least, go 20 minutes, adding a good stretch at the end.

  1. Work? Or workout?

You can exercise while you work, too. Stand up, walk around, do a few squats, isometric shrugs, curls and lateral raises. I love my stand-up desk. It keeps my mind alive while I’m working. Challenge your core by standing on one foot. When you take your break, move a new muscle. Reach, twist, flex, tighten.  It’s all exercise.

  1. Change it up

If you’ve been doing the same thing for 3-4 months, try changing it up by working with a personal trainer, rocking out to a new playlist, finding a different game to play or signing up for an online workout. Whatever you do, make it count.

  1. Tune it up

Your workout will fly by when you have the right music. Go solo or find a buddy or group to pump you up. Generate your exercise so that it’s exciting and fun. Imagine a crowd of people cheering you on, just like you did when you were a kid.

  1. Make it a game

Do you need a plan or a goal for each workout? Your goal could be a new pair of jeans, a 5K or a ¼-mile swim. Make an exercise list and put it in front of you while you’re working out. There are lots of phone apps with fun bells and whistles, too. Go for the gold!

  1. Make it count

Each time you exercise, check it off somewhere. Text somebody. Give yourself a pat on the back, behind, or your knees… literally! Personal rewards are celebrating that you’re alive. Plus, apps go wherever you go and help account for your progress.

  1. Find your motivation

If you need reminders of the benefits of exercise, seek inspiration. Start with positive self-talk. Next, find friends and social networks to motivate you. Post inspiring quotes with pictures. You have a body, so face your fitness fears and reach high for your goals.

  1. Count your quickie workouts

You don’t have to exercise long and hard every time. Take the stairs, walk fast to the bus stop, or do a 15-minute intense bike ride. When you’re focused on moving with strength and energy, your body will love you for it. Little changes change everything.

  1. Dance and play

Exercise doesn’t have to be a formal workout. Dance your way through life by playing with the kids, walking the dog, or going on a jogging date with a friend. Turn up the music and generate joy and cheerfulness.

  1. Generate success

You cannot fail at exercise because you’ve been doing it since you were born. You are exercising for you and the health of it. It doesn’t matter how fast or slow you go, you are still lapping all those people sitting on the couch.

Your body loves to move, so spark some enthusiasm, zest, pizzaz, and get going!
